Signs your seals have failed
Seals wear out slowly, so the signs are easy to miss:
- You can feel cold air around a window or door when it's closed.
- You can see daylight around the edges of a closed door.
- Wind whistles through the frame on windy days.
- Water collects on the sill or floor after rain.
- The caulking is cracked, has shrunk away from the frame, or is missing in places.
Weatherstripping or caulking?
Weatherstripping seals the gaps that open and close: between a door or window sash and its frame. Caulking seals the joints that don't move, such as where a window or door frame meets the wall. A drafty opening often needs both, and we check each when we look at the job.
Reseal before you replace
Worn seals are one of the most common reasons a window or door feels drafty. Replacing the weatherstripping or caulking is a much smaller job than replacing the window or door. If the frame itself is the problem, we'll tell you honestly.

How do I know if I need new weatherstripping or caulking?
If you can feel air moving around a closed window or door, see daylight at the edges, or find water on the sill after rain, the seals have probably failed. Send us a photo and we'll tell you what needs replacing.
Will new weatherstripping fix a foggy window?
